Celebrating the people who rock short hair

Ahead of expanding their product lineup, The Barb Shop approached SMAKK to help them celebrate and amplify the edge unique to those who rock short hair. 

The Barb Shop makes gender-neutral styling products for people with short hair. SMAKK saw an opportunity to double-down on their position as a brand that not only delivers premium products to the LGBTQ+ community, but uplifts, empowers, and unites those who have been underserved, underseen, and under-represented in the hair and beauty industry. 

We knew that their considered product offering presented an opportunity to lean into a more robust brand world, that places the spirit of inclusivity, and the joy of embracing your identity front and center. To assure that everyone from the youngest “Barbs” to the most mature, “Stately Barbs” could see themselves reflected in the branding and messaging, we leaned into their zippy and approachable invitation to  “come as you are”. 


SMAKK repositioned the brand through an updated identity reflected through an evolved packaging system and ecommerce experience. We made sure the evolution celebrated the brand’s disruptive and dynamic personality while strategically allowing for deeper brand storytelling, product expansion and demanding shelf space where a space doesn’t yet exist.
