Otis Dental was bringing a new conversation to the oral care space, and SMAKK was ready to help them talk–and disrupt the category—with at-home dental care and accessible relief for teeth-grinders everywhere.

Did you know that stress accounts for 70% of all bruxism, aka teeth grinding? And if you’re grinding your teeth at night, brushing and flossing aren’t enough to protect them from the chronic wear and tear. It can also lead to other health problems like headaches, neck and shoulder pain, snoring and sleep apnea. With over a decade’s experience as a dental professional, Otis Dental founder Andrew Lee, created a custom night guard to effectively and affordably prevent and correct oral damage caused by teeth grinding–without a trip to the dentist. He partnered with SMAKK Studios to develop a brand identity that would truly disrupt the oral care space by shining a light and leading a holistic conversation about the connections between stress and bruxism, and mental and physical health, with empathy, credibility and more smiles for all.

Not only were we inspired by Otis’ mission to bring easy, effective relief to people who need it most, but we were aligned in their vision to do it fairly, sustainably and with a genuine desire to help people. With Otis we also saw an opportunity to design and position a product that will stand out in an often sterile and unapproachable space in the way we love most–with joy, empathy, and a disciplined human touch–for something we can all smile about.

We worked with Otis to develop new branding, website, packaging, as well as social and email content, all featuring language and visuals that were both approachable and credible, positioning the brand as a disruptor in the category that was changing the conversation around oral health. This included engaging with customers in a way that not only educated and informed them about what bruxism is, but supported and empowered them as well. With a personalized brand voice, we helped Otis ease people into a larger wellness conversation by getting people talking about oral health and removing the stigma that comes with related mental health topics.

Results
After its rebrand from SMAKK in 2022, Otis Dental was written up by The Dieline and won a GDUSA Award in the same year for its Brand Identity. It was also featured in an ad for Target and is available at Target, Walgreens and Walmart.
