Old vines meet new tech

We developed an identity system and ecommerce experience for a Brooklyn-based wine seller.

The Challenge

Vanderbilt Wine Merchants not your typical neighborhood wine shop. Not only do they provide the best natural and everyday wines at their Brooklyn storefront, they also offer a large inventory of fine and rare wines for sophisticated collectors and sommeliers to purchase online.

Our Approach

SMAKK was tasked with communicating Vanderbilt’s dedication to quality wines in a way that was welcoming, not exclusive, and creating a user experience to simplify the complexities of wine provenance and taxonomy.

The Results

We created a logo that references wax seals and bank notes, but is simple enough to facilitate accessibility across a variety of applications. A rich palette of navy and gold is offset by natural creams and kraft paper. We developed an identity system that is as much about process as the wine itself. The collateral pieces mix stamps and handwritten elements, allowing the owner to fill out the information as needed, while maintaining an organized system that educates the consumer instead of overwhelming them. Finally, we supplied a toolkit of stamps, seals, and patterns to make sure the shopper felt the dedication to quality at every touchpoint.
